The Cavaliers Orchestra has a heritage of playing great music throughout the Southern states since 1946. Thousands of people have enjoyed listening and dancing to the exciting Big Band sounds of this wonderful band. Their repertoire includes the popular standard songs of the swinging years as well as Latin, show tunes, and jazz favorites.
The Cavaliers Orchestra is a 17 piece big band formed by Jimmy Fuller in 1946. It has continued to perform the music of the swinging years under the leadership of John Beecher, Earl Baker, Orlando DiFabio, John Shur, Frank Robinson, Alan Ramsay, Mickey Luttrell, and, since 1996, George Corradino. The Band has a library of over 450 songs arranged by some of the most outstanding Big Band arrangers in the country. JAZZ: Laura Coyle (Sun., Jan. 11 @ The Liberty Theatre)
The Columbus Jazz Society's January 11th Concert & Jam Session welcomes:
Laura Coyle, jazz vocalist
With Louis Heriveaux, piano and Craig Shaw, bass
http://www.lauracoylejazz.com
Laura Coyle sings with an intimate knowledge and a love for the tunes she chooses to perform. This teeny redhead has pipes! The pitch perfect clarity will remind some of Ella Fitzgerald and the tunes she favors are ripe for ruminating. It's an egoless pursuit of music that is a testament to purity in art. Even well worn tunes like The Girl From Ipanema seem to have a fresh picked quality, as heard on her first release Laura Coyle. Not so much reinterpreting but channeling -- you feel yourself sinking in and thinking, “oh, that's how it's supposed to sound ..."
A jazz aficionado from her teen years, she is so literate in the tradition that it is clear that she brings out the best in the seasoned musicians she keeps company with. No one is reining anyone in, everyone shines. Louis Heriveaux on piano, Craig Shaw on bass ... these are serious players and they all flow together with confidence.
Released in the summer of 2008, Coyle's first recording is a great introduction to serious jazz. There is no posturing in her lyrical presentation. She commands perfect pitch and has a truism to a tune that makes calling it a "cover" seem erroneous.
Laura currently sings with the Atlanta Jazz Chorus under the direction of Dwight Andrews, and leads her own band at dates around town, from Ray's on the River to Churchill Grounds. She's been honored to perform with greats like Audrey Shakir and Johnny O'Neal and the list keeps growing. It's a don't miss performance. Her ability to do what she really loves is an inspiration.
Laura's debut CD is available at: http://cdbaby.com/lauracoyle
