JAZZ: Kathy Roberts, Vocalist (Sun., Sept. 13 @ The Liberty Theatre)
A native Philadelphian, Kathy Roberts is a soulful, vibrant, and spirited vocalist whose powerful, sensuous contralto voice quite often brings audiences to their feet in resounding appreciation. Kathy also has a theatrical background that originated at Philadelphia’s own Freedom Theater where she studied drama, voice and dance. She appeared in the popular musical theater production of “The Gospelers” and went on to pursue her current, and very successful, singing career although theater has always been her first love.
Kathy sang background with balladeer Billy Paul for a number of years and performed duets with him onstage as well. She also enjoyed a short stint with musical genius Stevie Wonder just before starting her family. While raising her children she performed locally at a number of popular musical venues in and around Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. You could find her performing at such venues as Zanzibar Blue (Philadelphia and Delaware), the Wilmington Jazz Festival, The Philadelphia Clef Club, the Warwick Hotel, the Doubletree, Philadelphia Convention Center, Freedom Theater, Society Hill Playhouse, and various other private and civic events. She has also performed with well-known local and national artists such as Eddie Green (keys), Tyrone Brown (bass), Lee Smith (bass), Aaron Graves (keys), and Bootsie Barnes (sax), just to name a few.
Kathy has been recognized for her moving portrayal of Billie Holiday as star of Nate Davenport’s big band production of “Billie Holiday Your Music Lives On.”
Since relocating to Columbus, GA in 2005, Kathy has held the positions of Treasurer and Board Member of the Columbus Jazz Society. She has performed with many Columbus musicians as well, including Ed Cox, Dave Morgan, Shirantha Beddage, Tom Chadwick, Don Tipton, Peggy Jenkins, Lou Vallee, Charles “Big Saxxy”, and many others.
